I went to bartending school aand my question is...
Do any of you feel that taking the time out to go to school is worth it?
I'm finding that it it isn't and I was wondering what bartenders thought of this. |

SAW,
This question gets asked quite a bit, by people who are considering school, attending school and who have graduated. I hate to tell you, but there is no right answer to this question.
Schools offer the knowlege for drinkmaking, how to hold a bottle correctly, how to count measures, memorization techniques so you can remember what goes in certain drinks. Schools however, don't really give you the hands on trianing and skills that barthenders need. How to speak to a coustomer, how to manage unruly patrons and so on, are all skills that are aquired through experience.
Not may bars are terribly intrested in putting someone behind a bar who has had school but no experience in the day to day of being a bartender. You will more likely end up being a barback untill management feels that you are ready. You can just chalk that up to the "pecking" order of things and realize that everyone has to pay their dues in some way or another, and that school, however tantlizing their self promotion was, is not a way to cut out the middleman when it comes to practice.
Keep your spirits high, and take any job that you are offered in a bar,door man to barback. it is a foot in the door. Understand that your taking time to go to bartending school is admarable, but owners and managers are looking for experience, not necisarily education. You may not think that doormen and barbacks gain much "bartending" experience, but you'd be surprised!
All is not lost, keep looking and good luck.

Hey.
I also attended one of these schools, and I found that they can really help you to fine tune the little things that you might have missed otherwise.
Don't get me wrong though, there is no substitute for expirience, but if you love rocking the bar at least half as much as I do, you will learn quickly and have fun while doing it.
The thing here is that in bartending you will never know everything, but you can learn a lot by listening to other broters/sisters of the trade.
Even if you only learn like one or two little things from them, it will help you in becoming a better bartender.

does not make you a bartender
Not everyone can be a Bartender
At least not a great one |

I totally dissagree... Anyone could be a great bartender if its what they want, you just have to love it, if you dont then you could never ever be truelly great. I live, breath, and dream about being behind a bar, but i am not great yet, i am a good bartender yet i am still learning, and i probably always will be!!! with four years experiance in the trade, i have seen many people try and fail at being a bartender, but in all honesty it just wasnt what they wanted...
If you want it bad enough you can do anything!!!

The school I attended was a "hands-on" type school. Each student had their own "bar" that was set up just like a real bar. It helped me feel more confident behind a bar.
Additionally, I was lucky enough to have a teacher that gave us so many "extra ideas and tips" about the bartending business, pouring and mixing drinks, garnishes, etc. He taught "technique and presentation" as an important part of the job. It wasn't JUST pouring booze! Thanks to him I feel much more confident with the skills that I learned in school!

Lemme tell ya...I teach at bartender schools....ummmmmmmmmmmmm...jeeeez, there are things I wanna say and other things I can't say....
to really read about Bartender Schools go to webtender.com and search the subject....this will save alot of fingertips.

Sorry to say bartending schools are a waste of money (sorry if i offended anyone)They teach you things that you will learn on your own and scratch your head later and say why did i pay to learn whats in a rum and coke.If you want to flair thats a different story the videos on here are well well worth the money. save your tuition for a school and buy scotts videos
