Hi Everyone,
I want to get some opinions/stories/quotes on the subject of bartender suggestive selling. I wrote a few articles this summer for Nightclub & Bar magazine on the subject and i'm thinking of writing a follow up if i can get some more data from real bartenders out there who have opinions or experiences.
I'm of the opinon that a bartender can really increase sales if these methods are used and used regularly.
so,
1) let me know what you think
2) be sure to name your position ( bartender? ) and your bar name if you want me to include a plug for you in the article.
The more you write the more likely it will be used.
Thanks Guys and we appreciate you hanging out on our site Smile

I don't recommend upselling. The only time when i would ever upsell would be in a situation where a patron orders a drink which could be made 2 separate ways. If one is more expensive its acceptable to offer the more expensive one.

Ive seen bartenders upselling. I hate it. all i hear is "do you want fries with that". Bartenders are classy, not money grubbing (although we do love our tips).

I definately use upselling or suggestive selling to increase my sales. It is as easy as saying, " How 'bout we make that with Grey Goose" or "This recipe tastes best with Crown." When the music and pace are really cranking I will just show the bottle of premium liquor to the guest and nod.Been doing this in the Ultra Lounge setting for years and very rarely does the customer disagree.

These techniques are more difficult to employ in settings where the customer is there for the cheap drink. Never hurts to try, though. High sales rule.
